The UK government has recently updated their guidance ahead of the compulsory pupil [ Multiplication Tables Check](https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/multiplication-tables-check), which after delays due to the pandemic, will finally be taken by all Year 4 pupils during June 2022.
Pupils will be tested on their ability to answer 25 multiplication questions online. They will have six seconds to answer each question, and schools will be given a three-week window to ‘check’ all children in the year group.
In this blog, we take a look at what the new tests mean for primary teachers and provide guidance on how Learning by Questions' [Multiplication Tables Check](https://www.lbq.org/search/mathematics/assessment/multiplication-tables-check/practise-multiplication-tables-check-mtc-form-1?years=4&keywords=multiplication%20tables%20check%2F&openpreview=true) resources can help prepare pupils for the tests themselves.
## How will the pupil Multiplication Tables Check be used?
The data from the Year 4 times tables tests will be:
* used by schools to “provide additional support to pupils who require it.”
* available to Ofsted via the Analyse School Performance (ASP) data system.
* reported on by the Department for Education (DfE) to track standards over time.
* used by the DfE to provide schools with the ability to benchmark the performance of their pupils.
However, it is stated in the [Multiplication Tables Check Assessment Framework](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/755745/2018_MTC_assessment_framework_PDFA.pdf/) that “school level results will not be published in performance tables.”
## How can Learning by Questions help Year 4 pupils with the Multiplication Tables Check?
With only weeks until pupils undertake the test, we thought we'd highlight 3 ways that LbQ can prepare Year 4 pupils for the Multiplication Tables Check to come:
### 1. Practise using an online platform
The multiplication checks 'will be delivered on-screen (using a computer or tablet) and online (using an internet connection).' LbQ's Multiplication Table Check Question Sets can give you and your pupils the experience of testing digitally, whilst gaining information into your pupils' strengths and weaknesses
### 2. Multiplication Tables Check resources

These sets of 25 questions are presented in the same style as indicated in the Multiplication Tables Check Assessment Framework. With [**five Question Sets to choose from**](https://www.lbq.org/search/mathematics/assessment/multiplication-tables-check/practise-multiplication-tables-check-mtc-form-1?years=4&keywords=multiplication%20tables%20check/), these can be run as a daily task throughout the week. The question order is randomised, so the same set will appear differently each time it is run. Children who are not able to find the correct answer can move on to the next question and the missed questions are repeated at the end.
You can also use our new 'Exam Mode' feature, so that pupils don't know how they have done, or you can run them in our usual Learning Mode which will allow them to see when they are correct and to retry incorrect answers.
### 3. Time your pupils
The Multiplication Tables Check test will require pupils to answer one question within six seconds. LbQ Question Sets allow you to limit the time that students have to complete a particular set, which means that you can assess the pace at which your pupils are able to answer times tables. As pupil progression increases, teachers can reduce the time allowed for completion to try and replicate the pace required for the actual Multiplication Tables Check test, which is a target of less than three minutes per Question Set
